The free option, and still the most generous free tier in the category. Paddle acquired ProfitWell in May 2022 for over $200M, and the metrics product remains free and open to new signups whether or not you bill through Paddle. The branding has drifted rather than been formally renamed: profitwell.com now redirects to paddle.com, the app itself says Paddle Metrics, and the developer docs file it under Paddle Retain.
The short version
ProfitWell Metrics is free, accurate and still open to new signups, and for a lot of companies that is the right answer. The limits are documented rather than hidden: one-time revenue and refunds excluded from the numbers, one billing platform per account, monthly reporting only, and free data that is three to six hours old. Kometrics costs $19 a month and does not have those particular limits, though neither of us supports metered billing.
| ProfitWell Metrics | ||
|---|---|---|
| Price | $19/month, or free under $1,000 MRR. | Free. Genuinely, with no published caps. |
| How fresh the numbers are | Live. Webhooks update the book as events arrive. | Three to six hours on the free tier. Faster on Metrics Plus, which has no public price. |
| Metered and usage billing | Not supported either. Tiered and metered prices are skipped rather than guessed at. | Documented as not supported. |
| One-time revenue | Recorded and counted in invoice and cash totals, and correctly kept out of MRR. | Ignored. Refunds are generally ignored too, and VAT is excluded from every metric. |
| Multiple billing platforms | Four sources in one workspace. | One billing platform per account. |
| Reporting cadence | Day, week, month, quarter or year. | Monthly. |
| Forecasting, cohorts, risk | All included. | Cohorts and retention yes. No forecast or risk product. |
| Dunning | None. | Retain, bundled free with Paddle Billing. |
| Product momentum | Shipping weekly. | Stable rather than advancing. Price Intelligently was divested in 2024 and public review activity has largely stopped. |
Paddle acquired ProfitWell in 2022 and kept the metrics product free, with no published revenue or seat caps, open to anyone whether or not they bill through Paddle. It is rated 4.8 out of 5 on G2 across more than 120 reviews, and at least one public reviewer moved to it from a paid competitor because the calculation methods made more sense to them. It also comes with benchmarking against a very large base of companies at no cost.
If your billing is straightforward recurring subscriptions on one platform, and monthly reporting suits how you run the business, there is no argument here. Free wins. We would rather you use it than pay us for a difference you will not feel.
For simple recurring billing on one platform, free is the correct answer.
Paddle publishes these, which is to their credit, and they are worth reading before you commit. One-time revenue is ignored, refunds are generally ignored, and VAT is excluded from every metric. If a meaningful share of your income is one-off charges, your ProfitWell numbers are not describing your business. Metrics also does not support metered billing, though we should say plainly that we do not either: tiered and metered prices are skipped on our side rather than guessed at, so usage-based billing is not a reason to pick us over them.
Two more that catch people out: one account reads one billing platform, so if you bill through Stripe and Paddle you maintain separate logins and add the two together yourself, and reporting cadence is monthly, which is a problem if you report weekly.
The free tier also has a speed ceiling. Data refreshes every three to six hours. The documented fix is Metrics Plus, which brings it to 30 to 60 minutes and has no public price: you email them for a quote.
Check the list against your billing. One-time revenue, two billing platforms and the monthly-only cadence are the three that most often disqualify it.
One-time charges are recorded and counted in your invoice and cash totals rather than dropped, while correctly staying out of MRR. Four billing sources sit in one workspace instead of one per account. Reporting runs by day, week, month, quarter or year. The book updates from webhooks as events arrive rather than every few hours.
Then the tools that have no ProfitWell equivalent: Forecast, Revenue Calendar for when cash actually lands, Risk Radar for MRR carrying a warning sign, Goals and Maps. Kometrics AI answers questions against the live book.
What ProfitWell keeps that we do not have: Retain, their dunning product, which is bundled at no extra cost if you bill through Paddle and is genuinely good. And the benchmark data.
Pay us when the exclusions or the refresh delay actually cost you something. Not before.
It is live, free and accepting signups, and there is no sunset notice anywhere on Paddle properties. Anyone telling you it has been discontinued or renamed to something else is repeating a rumour.
What has changed is momentum. The standalone brand has been absorbed: profitwell.com now redirects to paddle.com, the app itself is branded Paddle Metrics and the developer docs file it under Paddle Retain. Price Intelligently, the pricing consultancy that came with the acquisition, was divested to SBI Growth in November 2024. Public review activity has largely stopped, with the most recent G2 review dating to October 2025 and nothing at all in 2026.
Read that how you like. Stable and free is a perfectly good thing for a tool to be. It is a different bet from a product shipping every week, and worth knowing which one you are making.
Not going away. Not advancing much either.
The same book priced by all four tools. ChartMogul and Baremetrics both charge on the revenue they are measuring, so their columns climb with yours. Ours does not move.
| Size of book | ChartMogul | Baremetrics | ProfitWell | |

| Under $1,000 MRR | Free | Free (under $120K ARR) | $75/mo | Free |
| $10,000 MRR ($120K ARR) | $19/mo | $69 to $119/mo | $75/mo | Free |
| $40,000 MRR ($480K ARR) | $19/mo | $69 to $119/mo | $255/mo | Free |

ChartMogul ranges span Starter to Pro at that band. Baremetrics excludes the Recover and Cancellation Insights add-ons at $129/month each. Verified August 13, 2026.
You are going to find this out in week two anyway. Better you hear it now.
Connect your billing source to Kometrics and the history rebuilds itself. There is no export step for the metrics.
We could not find a documented full-account historical export from ProfitWell for migration purposes. A customers API and CSV export exist. If having your own copy matters to you, check that before you rely on it.
If you use Retain for dunning and you are not on Paddle Billing, replace it before switching. Kometrics shows the MRR at risk but does not run recovery sequences.
Because it is free, the low-risk path is to keep it running alongside Kometrics for a month and compare. There is no cost to overlapping.
Where these numbers come from
Prices and limits were read off the vendor’s own pages on August 13, 2026. Review sites and comparison roundups carry stale pricing for every product here, so we do not use them as a source. If you spot something out of date, tell us and we will fix it.
Connect a read-only key and your whole billing history is rebuilt in minutes. Free under $1,000 MRR, then $19 a month.
No credit card. Read-only access to your billing data.
